Learn Together

The Learn Together Curriculum

At Waterford Educate Together National School, we follow the Learn Together Ethical Education Curriculum — a cornerstone of the Educate Together model and a key part of our commitment to providing a values-led, inclusive education for every child.

Unlike denominational schools, we do not provide religious instruction or faith formation. Instead, children learn through a broad, respectful and engaging programme that promotes ethics, equality, and understanding of diverse beliefs and worldviews.

The Learn Together curriculum helps children develop empathy, critical thinking, kindness, and a deep respect for themselves and others — all essential skills for life in a diverse and changing world.

What Is the Learn Together Curriculum?

Developed by Educate Together, this curriculum:

  • Promotes human rights, equality & active citizenship

  • Explores diverse beliefs and worldviews with respect

  • Encourages critical thinking and moral development

  • Supports environmental responsibility & sustainability

It is taught across all class levels and is organised into four key strands.

The Four Strands of Learn Together

1. Moral and Spiritual Development

Children explore questions about right and wrong, fairness, empathy, and personal wellbeing. They develop emotional literacy, a strong sense of ethics, and an understanding of how their actions affect others.

2. Equality and Justice

This strand helps children learn about identity, diversity, rights, gender equality, and inclusion. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, challenge unfairness, and act with kindness and respect.

3. Belief Systems

Children learn about major world religions and non-religious worldviews in a balanced and objective way. No belief is prioritised over another. The focus is on understanding, coexistence, and respect for different perspectives.

4. Ethics and the Environment

Pupils explore environmental responsibility, sustainability, and care for the planet. They learn how small everyday actions can contribute to a better, healthier world.

Why the Learn Together Curriculum Matters

The Learn Together programme helps children become:

  • Kind, reflective and empathetic individuals

  • Open-minded and respectful of others

  • Confident in their own identity

  • Engaged contributors to their community and the wider world

This curriculum supports our school’s ethos of equality-based, inclusive education for all, preparing children not just for academic success but for meaningful participation in society.
