What kind of school is Waterford Educate Together NS
Waterford ETNS is an equality-based, co-educational, child-centred primary school. We are part of the national school system in Ireland and follow the Department of Education’s Primary School Curriculum, just like every other recognised school in the country.
We’re also part of the Educate Together network — a group of schools with a shared commitment to inclusion, respect, and democratic values.
What is different about an Educate Together school?
Educate Together schools are fully recognised national schools, so your child will study the same subjects (Maths, English, Gaeilge, etc.) and take part in the same assessments as children in other schools.
But there are important positive differences in how we approach education:
What’s the Same | What’s Different |
---|---|
National Curriculum | We place strong emphasis on child voice, critical thinking, and inclusion. |
Co-educational | Children of all genders, beliefs and family backgrounds are equally valued. |
State-funded and free to attend | No school uniform – we believe children should feel comfortable and be themselves. |
Standard school day and holidays | No faith formation or religious instruction. Instead, we teach about all belief systems equally through our Ethical Education curriculum. |
Qualified, caring teachers | A culture of respect, empathy and equality is embedded in every classroom. |
School inspections and standards | Families have a strong voice in school life – we welcome parental involvement. |
Our goal is to provide an education that celebrates difference, nurtures the whole child, and prepares young people to thrive in a diverse world.
Is there religious instruction in the school?
No. Waterford ETNS does not offer faith formation or sacramental preparation (e.g. Communion or Confirmation).
Instead, we follow the Learn Together Ethical Education Curriculum, which teaches:
- Shared human values (like kindness and fairness)
- Belief systems and religions from around the world
- Critical thinking and ethical reflection
- Equality, justice and environmental awareness
We do not promote any one belief system as right or wrong. Children are taught to be respectful, open-minded and curious.
Are there extracurricular activities at Waterford ETNS?
Yes! We believe in giving children opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills beyond the classroom.
At Waterford ETNS, we offer a growing range of extracurricular activities, including:
- Sports: various team sports and fitness activities
- Choir: open to children who enjoy singing and performing
- Chess: popular with pupils of all ages and levels
- Music: opportunities for performance and creativity
But what truly sets us apart is our wraparound care.
We partner with Sherpa Kids, who provide before-school and after-school care onsite at our school. This means:
- Children are cared for in a familiar environment
- Flexible support for working families
- Fun, enriching activities in the morning and afternoon
- A strong sense of continuity between school and care
Sherpa Kids also run a variety of clubs and programmes during their sessions — ranging from arts and crafts to STEM and sports.
This level of on-site care and engagement helps families balance work and school life, and creates a stronger sense of community across the school day.
How do I enrol my child?
You can apply through our Admissions section on the website. There you’ll find:
- Our Admissions Policy
- The Annual Admissions Notice (with key dates)
- An online or downloadable Application Form
We welcome all families — regardless of background, religion or nationality.
What are the school hours?
- Junior & Senior Infants: 8:50am – 1:30pm
- 1st to 6th Class: 8:50am – 2:30pm
Children should arrive on time and be collected promptly at home time.
Is there homework?
Yes – but we keep it balanced. Homework supports learning and helps build routines, but it should never feel like a battle at home. We promote age-appropriate, manageable tasks.
More information can be found in our homework policy.
What makes learning different at Waterford ETNS?
We offer all core curriculum subjects, but our teaching style is active, creative and child-led. Children learn through:
- Inquiry-based learning
- Group projects and discussions
- Environmental and community initiatives
- Programmes like Green School, Active School, and Blue Star Flag
- Celebrations of diversity, culture and identity
How do you support children with additional needs?
We are proud to be an inclusive school and we work hard to support every child according to their individual needs — academically, socially and emotionally.
Waterford ETNS receives the same SEN resources and supports as all other schools, through the NCSE (National Council for Special Education). We do not receive any additional or enhanced resources because we are an Educate Together school — this is a common misconception.
We are, however, extremely proud to have two dedicated autism classes in our school community. These classes are fully integrated into the life of the school and offer additional support to autistic pupils within a nurturing, inclusive environment.
Thanks to the dedication of our SEN team, teachers, and SNAs, Waterford ETNS has built a strong reputation for inclusive practice and child-centred support. We work closely with parents, specialists, and support agencies to ensure every child can thrive.
How can I get involved as a parent?
We encourage families to be part of the school community. You can:
- Join our Parent and Guardians Association
- Help with school events or initiatives
- Share your culture, skills or interests with the class
- Stay engaged through Aladdin Connect and newsletters
How does the school communicate with parents?
We use:
- Aladdin Connect (for messages, attendance, and notices)
- Email and text for urgent communication
- Regular newsletters
- Updates via Instagram and Facebook pages
